Codename List

Below you will find a comprehensive list of model codes for Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Mini, Porsche and Smart vehicles.

Many German car manufacturers assign model code numbers to each type / generation of vehicle that they produce, this is primarily an internal code for the manufacturers reference but is useful when identifying parts that will fit your vehicle. The model code usually refers to the chassis rather than specific engine/suspension configurations. An Audi A4 8K for example refers to the latest Audi A4 that has been produced since 2008 and comes in a variety of engine sizes and configurations; however, permissible wheel sizes will be common across the 8K range.

These model codes (modellbezeichnung) may also be referred to as development codes (Entwicklungscodes), Types (Typ) or internal codes (interne bezeichnung). You'll often find these model codes used within our website and on our wheel fitment guides.

Each car manufacturer uses a different coding system - companies within the same group, like BMW/Mini, often use a common system. Here are some examples of model codes:

Mercedes vehicle codes use a letter (W, S, C, A etc.) followed by a number. The letter refers to the class of vehicle – W for Saloon (Wagen), C for Coupe and so on.

BMW use a system of development codes for numbering that were originally prefixed with E (for Entwicklungscode) followed by a number, this has now progressed to 'F' (BMW) or 'R' (Mini) followed by a number.

Audi use a Typ code system that is a number followed by a letter (e.g Audi A4 8K). In addition to the Typ code people sometimes refer to Audi vehicles using their model number and the Volkswagen Group platform code (e.g Audi A4 B8). This is a common platform numbering system that VW Group use and is an alternative to the Typ codes. For more information on platform codes, click here.
