Most BMW models are now fitted with runflat tyres. These are expensive to replace and give an uncomfortable ride. Additionally, it can be difficult to determine when you have a flat tyre and driving for extended periods on a flat runflat tyre can necessitate complete replacement. Many owners are now choosing to fit standard (non-runflat) tyres and carry a spare wheel or mobility kit to get them out of trouble if needed.

Using Your BMW Space Saver Wheel

Over recent years BMW have moved away from full sized spare wheels to either space saver wheels or run flat tyres. It’s important to remember when using space-savers that they have a limited speed rating and they are only designed for short-term use. You should always check the speed rating on your spare wheel before using it, and also check your spare wheel’s tyre pressure on a regular basis.

On vehicles with locking wheel nuts always ensure that you have these with you when travelling, so that you are able to change your wheel at the roadside if you get a puncture. You should also remember that when driving on a space saver it is much narrower than a regular wheel, and this can change the handling and driving characteristics of your vehicle - especially when braking and steering.

Frequently Asked Question: How can I use a 17" spare wheel on my car that has 18" (or any other size) wheels?

The wheel size in inches just describes the diameter of the metal wheel. When used with a tyre of the correct size according to the manufacturer, the overall diameter of the wheel with tyre fitted is identical. So a 17" wheel has a tyre with larger sidewalls to be the same size as a 20" wheel with tyre of smaller sidewall height.
